Steps You Can Do to Help Prepare Your Florida Home or Condo Prior to a Hurricane Evacuation

Officially June 1 marked the beginning of Hurricane season in Florida. This year's forecast, according to Weather Services International (WSI), a Weather Channel company, is that it will be a higher than average year for hurricanes. While WSI does not see activity reaching the historic levels of 2005 and 2010, it does expect a more impactful season along the United States coastline than 2010.
Most would agree that we can all be better prepared for these unfortunate events. He suggests, while there are many things we can't control when it comes to weather, there are some important things homeowners can do in order to be ready if a hurricane evacuation order should come.
Below are five of the ten recommended steps they recommend to help prepare your Florida home or condominium. These may help to minimize your property's damage if it's subjected to a hurricane.
1. Place inside all exterior furniture and loose objects on pool decks, yards, and balconies.
2. If you have hurricane shutters, roll down shutters, or removable storm panel systems. Securely lock in the closed position. If you do not have approved hurricane protection devices, securely nail in place 3/4 inch plywood over all your accessible window and door openings.
3. For those with screen pool enclosures and or screen patios/balconies cut the screens at the bottom of each section for winds anticipated over 90 miles per hour. It will relieve pressure off the structure.
4. For those with turbine ventilators on their roofs - remove them and securely cap. Solar hot water panels should also be securely shrink-wrapped.
5. Remove all fragile objects and valuable possessions away from windows and sliding doors.
